Tips to Fix Data Corruption Issues in Outlook PST files

11 Aug

Outlook Personal Storage Table (PST) files are one of the powerful assets of an organization as they contain mission-critical data. These files carry sensitive business information and may get damaged by even any slightest modification. PST corruption may strike due to several reasons, such as malware attack, oversizing of file, application errors, abrupt closing of MS Outlook, etc. In these circumstances, the crucial information in your Outlook personal folders becomes inaccessible. To restore all your lost invaluable data, you should go for PST recovery using advanced third-party software.

Let us consider a real time scenario. Suppose you are using Office 2003 with the latest service pack installed on your Windows XP system. You frequently encounter problems while deleting items in the file. You also receive ‘not enough resources error’ while trying to send or receive emails. You have split the file, but haven’t compacted it . You have run ‘chkdsk’ to verify the disk and have reinstalled Outlook, but with no success. The same issues with the PST show up again.

These are some of the prominent errors that you get every time on using the file:

The file xxxx.pst has reached its maximum size. To reduce the amount of data in this file, select some items that you no longer need, then permanently (shift + del) delete them.

Or

This application has failed to start because MSMAPI32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem

The above errors are common when your PST file has become corrupt due to over-sizing. At this stage, you may attempt to repair your Inbox by running the ‘Scan.pst’ tool. You can do so by following these steps:

  • Click on ‘Start’ and then select ‘Search’.
  • Now, click ‘All Files and Folders’.
  • Here search for ‘Scanpst.exe’ tool.
  • In the search results, double-click on ‘Scanpst.exe’ to open the Inbox Repair tool.
  • Specify the path of your Outlook PST and click ‘Start’.
  • After completion of the process, click ‘OK’.

If you still find problems with the file, you should take help of third-party Outlook PST recovery tools. These tools use proprietary mechanisms to repair the corrupt PST file and recover all your mission-critical data. With the help of these software, you can selectively recover the PST file components and save them to a desired location in your system. Moreover, they support all the latest Outlook versions, including MS Outlook 2010, 2007, 2003, 2002, and 2000.
