Are You Unable to Access Exchange Server Data Due to Corruption?

Exchange Server is a server-side of client server which is designed to work with various Microsoft e-mail clients like MS Outlook, Outlook Express and Entourage. At times, such situations may occur where you may experience issues while working on Exchange Server. Some issue lead to loss or inaccessibility of data stored on Exchange Server which can cause loss of productivity in an organization. In such situations, Exchange Server recovery software can help you to recover the data.

Exchange Server uses two file formats to store data viz. EDB and STM. The EDB file is Exchange Database file and stores user accounts including e-mail messages. STM file is known as streaming file and stores attachments and other primary Internet content. In case, any of these files get corrupted, you will not be able to access the data and when you attempt to mount the database, you receive an error message. The error message may resemble to the following:

“An internal processing error has occurred. Try restarting the Exchange System Manager or the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service, or both.

ID no: c1041724

Exchange System Manager”


The above error message occurs when you try to mount a database on server running MS Exchange Server. The above error message can occur if any of the following conditions are true:

  • The Exchange Log file has mismatching signature
  • Antivirus software has deleted or quarantined the Log files
  • A command has been executed with wrong logfile base name
  • Exchange database is corrupt

Out of the above mentioned reasons, the common cause of the issue is corruption of database. When MS Exchange Server is started, it determines the consistency of database. If Exchange Server finds the database as corrupt then it shows an error message.


To solve this issue, you can follow any of the below given measures:

  • Use a backup to restore the database
  • Run the eseutil /p command to fix the corrupt database

After following the above mentioned measures, there are chances that you may face the same issue again. In such situations, you can use a commercial Exchange recovery software. In market, you can find a number of software that claim to repair and recover data from corrupt Exchange Server database. Also, some of the software are available with a demo version so that you can try the software before purchasing it.

    Yes, Jerry. You are absolutely right. If the corruption is on minor level, firstly try default inbuilt utilities for recovering the exchange database but if you think corruption level is very high and inbuilt utilities are not able to fix the problem then go for a third party tool. The program that you have mentioned, successfully performed data recovery from my corrupted Exchange server database. Thank you so much for the help!
